An onslaught of goals saw AFC Columbia destroy Southside FC 10-0 in what was the home opener, and the team’s third game of the season.
A massive blowout of these proportions greatly aids AFCC’s playoff campaign, as one of the MWPL’s tiebreakers for teams of the same record is the season goal differential.
Head Coach Chris Miller was thrilled with the squad’s victory.
“Saturday was certainly a cathartic night for us as we’ve been close to breaking out and things finally clicked for us offensively. Doing it at home was even better!” Miller exclaimed.
After the weekend’s matches concluded, AFCC is in possession of first place in the Gateway West Division. Four of the six teams in the division are tied with 6 points (3 given for a win, 1 for a tie). However, their new boosted goal difference propels Columbia to first with the tiebreaker.

Everyone feasted during the team’s 10-0 victory, as nine of the goals were scored by different players. Check out this Instagram post for the full list of goal scorers.
“We certainly weren’t trying to run the score up,” Miller explained. “10 goals with 10 assists and nine different people scoring just showed how unselfish and locked in everyone was that night.”
AFC Columbia looks to stay hot in their next matchup on Sunday, June 7. They face 5th place squad Union KC on the road at 5:00 p.m. located at Paragon Star Complex in KC.
Union KC has only played twice so far this season, but they have lost both matches to First City FC and Great Plains FC. They look to capture both their first win of the year, as well as score their first goal of the season.
“We enjoyed Saturday for 48 hours and then got back to work. That moment is over and we have so much ahead of us that we got right to work trying to improve.” Miller said.
He notes that the match against Union will be a big challenge, and the team must stay sharp on their a-game.
“We know we have to be sharp every time out or we will be in trouble,” Miller said. “This league isn’t forgiving for off nights. We’ve already had one and can’t afford any more.”
