AFC Columbia seeks redemption in battle with Atletico

It’s an old-fashioned STL vs. CoMo battle, as AFC Columbia hosts Club Atletico STL on Friday, June 14.

Friday is First Responders Night for both AFC and the Missouri Reign, as all active and former firefighters, police and military receive free admission.

In addition it’s non-league day at the pitch, meaning that all Sporting KC and St. Louis City SC season ticket holders receive free entry on Friday.

Columbia is coming off a 2-0 home win against Junction FC last Saturday. Forward Jacob Moore scored both goals, marking the first time that a player has scored two goals in an MWPL match for the club this year.

Both goals came in running play, as Moore and his teammates used quick feet and nifty passing to penetrate the Junction back line.

The success extended to the defensive side of the pitch, as strong positioning prevented any key opportunities for Junction throughout the match. Columbia outshot the visitors 10-5 throughout the match, including hitting a pair of posts during the match.

This game marked a clean sheet for goalkeeper John Amoah, his first in MWPL this season. However, in three games of MWPL play, Amoah has not allowed a goal in running play, as both goals came immediately after a stoppage.

The win moved AFC into the No.4 spot in the MWPL standings while playing one less game than the three teams ahead of them. Club Atletico currently sits below AFC in the No. 6 spot, but could move ahead with a win.

When these two teams met in St. Louis, Atletico sneaked out a 1-0 win as the Columbia offense was unable to push a goal through. That game marked the only time in six games this season that AFC has been held scoreless.

“If we just focus on what we do, we’ll be okay,” head coach Chris Miller said after the win against Junction.

But now, the team is ready for revenge. Columbia has the hometown advantage, rolling undefeated in MWPL play at home this season. The game is Friday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. at R Marvin Owens Stadium at Columbia College.

Stats to Know

AFC Columbia has controlled the majority of possession in every game except for the Junction FC match.

Jacob Moore is the only player in club history with multiple two-goal games.

It has been 150 minutes of MWPL action since AFC and goalkeeper John Amoah has allowed a goal.
